Tell us about your sports and fitness background: My sports background was never with weights, but mostly running and recreational sports. I’ve played competitive tennis most of my life.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? I was exposed to CrossFit by Jason and Blaine Thomason. They keep pursuing me for months and finally I surrendered to their wishes and came to my first foundations class in August 2013. It was horrible. I was an average fitness person, who was a novice when it came to lifting weights, using kettle bells, and climbing a rope. During the first foundations WOD, I wanted to quit and wanted to die. My initial thoughts were, “7 minutes can’t be too bad”...boy was I wrong. After the first workout I stayed in my car for about 15 minutes debating if I could drive or even survive. After this experience, I was not initially a fan because I felt overwhelmed by all the movements and was not sure even if I could continue at that pace. Well, now here I am almost 2 years later and LOVE it.
What sort of changes have you seen in you body, health, and fitness since starting CF? My strength, fitness level, and psychology about the sport has dramatically changed. Not only do I believe in CrossFit, I am an advocate for it’s methods of how to help everyone, no matter their fitness level. I have seen major changes in my strength, from squats, to cleans, pull-ups, push ups, and most importantly my double-unders! My fitness level continues to be challenged everyday I’m at CrossFit, but what makes this place different are the people that surround you and support you through the difficulties! I am grateful and thankful for their continued support.
Any advice for people just getting started? PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, don’t give up. It can be overwhelming at first, but as your confidence grows it becomes easier “to manage the toughness”. Always listen to the coaches because they really want everyone participating to grow in their fitness journey.
