Occupation: IT Systems Manager at Cone Health
When did you start CrossFit? October 2014
Favorite WOD: Fran, anything with pull-ups, or shoulder to overhead
Least Favorite WOD: Anything with running or burpees
Tell us about your sports and fitness background: I played football, hockey, and wrestling throughout most of high school, wrestling being my primary sport. I stayed active while in the Marines and got into working out! After having kids and getting into the daily work grind, I went many years without exercise.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Me and my buddy Daniel Woods just decided to start doing something more for workouts, and on a whim said, "Let's try CrossFit!" Our first WOD was rough! We did a 12 minute AMRAP of air squat, pushups, and sit-ups. Sadly, I only got through three rounds. I knew it was time to commit and get in better shape!
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health, and fitness since starting CF? When I started I weighed about 220lbs. Over time I went down to 195, but am now back up to about 205. I don't really focus on the scale, I focus on the fact that I feel better! I can get out, be active, and not feel like I am short of breath. I was also shocked that even at an older age I could still gain strength. I thought that wouldn't happen, but over time with the work and effort I gained strength.
Any advice for people just getting started? Don't quit and don't be intimidated. Everyone starts out feeling like, "Wow, this is crazy hard!" But just do what you can. Ask the coaches how to modify things to fit your level. Over time, the changes will happen and you will make huge improvements, break PR's, and before you know it complete you first Rx workout!
