"It's Open Season!" These words both excite and strike fear into the hearts and minds of CrossFitters all over the world. Each week a new workout, masterminded by Dave Castro, is released on Thursday night for the entire CrossFit world to perform. For some, this is the first step in qualifying for regionals and ultimately the CrossFit Games (what you see on ESPN every summer). This year, 17.1 was a couplet of pain, alternating dumbbell snatches and burpee box jumps. Pro Tip: if the workout doesn't look too bad, you better watch out!
For the second year, CrossFit Eden is having a blast performing these workouts as a community each week in an event known as Friday Night Lights. This year, we have nearly 70 athletes competing! There is so much energy coursing through the building that it feels like the roof is going to blow off! My job during this event is to make sure that you, my dear readers, will know some of the stories of the amazing members that make up our fitness community at CrossFit Eden.
Our members come from all walks of life. We have moms and dads, teenagers, grandparents, bartenders, accountants, nurses, teachers, firefighters, CEOs and everything in between. The ways we could classify ourselves are endless, but one common characteristic unites us, to feel good in our own skin and to live a healthy and productive life. Angela Shumate told me that a year ago she could not have imagined doing anything like the Open. But now, after a round of Whole30, a Whole Life Challenge and joining our Fit30 program, Angela is right there with her team, crushing the snatches and burpee box jumps like a pro.
While chatting during the first night of FNL I heard an awesome story that I want to share with you. Friday marked the 20th anniversary of Hugh Hodges' heart attack. What an incredible turn around! Hugh said that he spent five days in the hospital all those years ago, and when he got out he knew everything about his life needed to change. So he quit smoking, started eating better, and began exercising. He has continued all of those healthy habits (along the line, he also had knee replacement surgery) and now we are proud to call him a member at CrossFit Eden, where he smiles thru every workout and is dedicated to attending every Fit30 class. Hugh, we love having you and your family around!
As many of you know, life can change in an instant. At CrossFit we have a way of dealing with this. " 3-2-1...GO! "
