If you have not yet had the opportunity to check out our Friday Night Lights series at Crossfit Eden...boy, are you missing out! This week, yet again, we saw some amazing performances and smiles that lit up the night! 17.3 is the midway point of the Open series. For many, this is where it gets real. This is when you see real courage, strength, determination, pressure and accomplishments. This week the workout gave our members the opportunity to push past both mental and previous physical barriers to complete a workout where completing your reps in time allowed you to continue moving up in weight for a highly technical lift, the squat snatch. Paired with chest-to-bar pull-ups, these two movements tax your entire system, from core to extremities. Sounds like fun, right! YES!! It is...I promise, we are having more fun at CFE than you can find anywhere else on a Friday night in town!
First lets talk about how excellent the teams looked. The theme this week was "Favorite Character" and teams went all out showing their creativity. Team "Amino Disrespect" was getting it done in superhero gear. "Cash me in da Box" knocked it out of the park as "The Sandlot." "Kippin it Real" channeled the magic of Gryfindor and Harry Potter. But, hands down, "Notorious CFE" went legendary with their creative take on a 90's game show, "Legends of the Hidden Temple." Seriously, team Notorious CFE, you crushed it! Customized shirts and gold hats for the win!
And the winning continued on an individual basis for our members all throughout the night. In one of the earliest heats we saw teen athlete Colby Harris literally leave a part of himself on the floor. Not even a torn hand could stop him from hitting a big PR with a 135# squat snatch performed with great form. Well done Colby! (But be sure to take care of those hands!) In nearly every heat that followed we saw an athlete push a little harder and dig a little deeper. In fact, just a few minutes before her heat, Kim Doran made the decision to move into the RX category. After attending her CrossFit Level 1 training and attaining her level 1 certificate, Kim was ready to try for a double PR. She was able to snatch 95# five times and perform all of her chest-to bar pull-ups for the first time ever in a workout. Congrats! You'll make an awesome coach! When you view the pictures from this night be sure to look for the smiles on the faces of Logan Fulton, Danielle Carl, and Tricia Powell as well. They all set new personal records by at least ten pounds while completing 17.3.
The Open gives us all additional opportunities to push beyond a perceived limit. The competitive yet supportive atmosphere that you feel when walking into our great box is amplified during Friday Night Lights a hundredfold. You may find that the support and energy of your team around you pushes you to try something you have never done before or never thought you could. Just ask Nikki Benton, who completed all 214 reps including a lifetime snatch PR at 105#. Ask Frank Beach or Roxxy Wilson, who are competing after coming back from injuries. Ask Kathryn Bradford, determination stamped clearly on her face as she cheered for her team mates. I asked her if she was going to try out some Olympic lifting for the first time and she said, with a spark "Oh yeah, I'm gonna do that!" I can't wait to see what YOU can do!
