If you’re an educator, you know the struggles and stress of every day, week, and entire
school year! You probably think going to a workshop, reading a book, or becoming more
organized is the only way to solve those struggles and relieve the stress. I’m here to tell you
there’s something even better out there to help, it’s CROSSFIT! Here are the ways CrossFit has
improved me and made me a better teacher!
#1 - Stress reliever!
Not every day in my 2nd grade classroom is filled with well-behaved, cute children. Actually, let’s be honest here, that day will never exist! Also rare are the perfectly planned lessons, a finished to-do list, or meetings where you leave happy. After days like these, the last thing you want to do is go work out. However, it is the BEST thing to do on those days. About two minutes into the warm-up my day suddenly doesn’t seem so bad, and after the WOD (CrossFit lingo for "Workout of the Day") I feel like I can conquer anything (after I can breathe again, of course)! All in all, Crossfit is a huge stress reliever!
#2 - Confidence!
I feel better, I look better, overall I am becoming a better person. That brings confidence, which is key, right? Standing in front of a room full of 20 kids can be pretty intimidating and even more intimidating, their parents! I’m not sure how to put this into words, but CrossFit has made me stand a little taller and face those little faces and their parents with more confidence!
#3 - I'm a Better Role Model to my Students
Kids look up to adults and are like little sponges, in that they take in everything we do! A large amount of my time is spent with these "little sponges" and I love to share my life with them! I share with them why it’s important to be healthy, I play with them on the monkey bars at recess, and most importantly, I make sure they see that I am fueling my body with healthy foods and water. As I grow and learn more about living a healthy active lifestyle, I incorporate these habits into my daily classroom schedule, like stretching in the mornings, body movements after reading, and active games with math! Helping to create these healthy habits with them might even inspire their families and friends to become more active and healthy too! Added bonus: my kiddos think I’m a super awesome teacher because I lift weights!
#4 - Differentiation
We hear that word all the time, and with it comes stress because how can we differentiate for 20
kids every lesson. CrossFit hasn’t helped me do that yet, but it has taught me that it is
important and needs to be done. I can’t imagine walking up to the whiteboard and only seeing
the "RX" (most advanced) option. I would fail often, and with failure would come me giving up and quitting. Same in the classroom, if I continually give kids assignments that they can’t do, they are going to give up and quit. There always needs to be a scaled version or a way to modify so success can be built!
Overall, CrossFit has positively impacted my life in so many ways, health, happiness, and my career! If you need a positive change in your life, come to CrossFit Eden and give it a try!
