This year, social media is lit up with guesses each week about what the Open will hold for CrossFit athletes all over the world. An early clue posted showed a 50# dumbbell and a 35# dumbbell. In 17.1, we used a dumbbell to perform alternating snatches in a brutal couplet. Perhaps you breathed a sigh of relief, thinking that at least the dumbbells were used and we wouldn't see them again. That turned out to be a premature celebration, as 17.2 prominently featured them as well. This time, the WOD consisted of walking lunges with both the dumbbells carried in the front rack position, toes to bar, and dumbbell cleans for two rounds then the lunges along with bar muscle-ups and more cleans. Alternative versions of the workout included pull-ups. The workout seemed written to challenge both grip and midline stability. The stellar CFE athletes were undaunted by the task, suiting up to celebrate the best parts of AMERICA during this week's Friday Night Lights. All the teams this week were looking good, sporting the red, white, and blue. We even had cameo appearances from Lady Liberty herself!
Nikki Meeks has a permanent smile on her face. An elementary school teacher and volunteer at her church, Nikki can be found spreading joy and and serving others daily, happily hash tagging #bettertogether and #bestyearever on every post. Nikki bravely participated in the biggest Thurdsday Throwdown so far! Her smile got even bigger, and so did the cheers from the crowd, when she was able to achieve her FIRST EVER pull-up, followed by several more in an incredible display of determination. Congratulations also go out to Merri Washburn and Leslie Cassell who nailed down their first pull-ups as well.
Another first was achieved by Jason Tilley. Jason is a soccer player, as well as a swim coach. No stranger to athletic pursuits, Jason was determined to learn this new movement during the workout. Coached by Timmy Weddle from the VIP section, Jason worked to use his strength and athletic prowess to perform several bar muscle-ups for the first time ever.
Each Friday Night Lights team is composed of amazing individuals doing incredible things. Great work to all who showcased American strength, grit and hard work this week!
